Learning Updates
Literacy: This past week, students engaged in a number of writing and reading stations. The writing stations were focused on revising our diary of an animal journal by adding details to include transition words, time markers and conjunctions. We also wrote a nonfiction summary paragraph about an article we listened to called The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Ask your child what it was about! The last writing piece was a free story writing where students used their imagination and creativity. For the reading stations, one was focused on fluency, one was practicing our vocabulary building and the last one was about making inferences, which is taking clues from a text to understand what's happening.
Math: Students are continuing to work on measurement. This past week, we focused on reviewing using personal referents (ie. finger or hand or arm span) and benchmarks (ie. a pencil is 10 cm) to measure items. We also reviewed perimeter and finding the missing length of polygons.
Science: We learned about how First Nations, Metis and Inuit groups connect and live on the land in the four seasons, while focusing on plants Indigenous to Alberta and buffalos.
Wellness: May is Asian Heritage Month! We engaged in six different Asian cultures and learned about them through arts and crafts. Ask your child about what they made! On Thursday, we also engaged in World Cultural Day!
