 Important Updates & Events

1. Picture Day is on Monday, September 28!

2. Orange Shirt Day is on Tuesday, September 29.

3. There is no school on Wednesday, September 30. It is National Truth & Reconciliation Day. 

4. Happy Mid-Autumn Moon Festival to those that celebrate it! See you all on Monday!

Learning Updates

ELAL (English): Students learned about adjectives this week! We also wrote about our favourite physical features. We are focusing on writing proper sentences and will begin adding more details. Our spelling words this week was "today, Monday, eye, two, honest, heart". 

Math: This week, Grade 3s learned to compare and order numbers using >, < and =. We worked with numbers up to 100 000!

Social Studies: We are continuing to have discussions about how to be great citizens. We learned about volunteering and charity this week!

Science: Students engaged in another experiment! We used the scientific method and answered the question "What would happen to gummy bears if we put them in water, salt water and sugar water?"

Art: To celebrate Fall Equinox and Mid Autumn Moon Festival, we listened to stories and made fake mooncakes with special clay!

Student Highlights

Muhammad: On Monday, we started Epic and it's for literacy stations. There's lots to do in literacy stations and I think my favourite right now is literacy stations.

Tristan: We are going to have Open House this Thursday!

Aarisha: We did an experiment in Science. We put gummy bears in salt water, normal water and sugar water. 

Bennett: For reading, we read Third Grade Angels and George was being really good in the story. 

Sehrish: On Wednesday, we had our first practice lockdown and our teacher said it was great!

HA: We did Social Studies and technology. On the technology, we played Math games on the computers.

September 14-18 Weekly Update

 Important Events and Updates

1. Picture Day is on Monday, September 28! Bring your best smile!

2. Teacher Open House will be on Thursday, September 24 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Please see Mrs. Brinson's latest email for more information!

3. No School on Friday, September 25 for a PD Day.

4. Library Book Exchanges start on Monday, September 21. Your child have a specific day they will be able to go to the library.

5. September 30th is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation meant to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada. On Tuesday, September 29th, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt or something else with orange to recognize Orange Shirt Day and the National Truth and Reconciliation Day. Students will be engaging in learning throughout the week to honor this important day. Through read alouds and learning tasks, students will focus on understanding what they each need to feel safe and cared for at school and to consider this question: “What action can each member of our school community do to make sure every student feels safe and cared for at school, everyday?” This is an opportunity for Northern Lights students and staff to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community.

Learning Updates

ELAL (English): We are beginning spelling check in's this week! Students practice a few very important words that don't follow the letter sound rules and every Friday, we try to spell them without any mistakes. This week, the words were "could, should, would, where, there, said". We also wrote about how our brain learns best by practicing sentence writing. Students also reviewed what nouns and verbs are. 

Math: This week, students learned about the difference between place value and the value of digits. We talked about regrouping and how digits go up to 9 and then max out at 10. When that happens, they go to the next place value. We also practiced writing numbers up to 100 000!

Science: We did a fun experiment by becoming scientists and following the Scientific Methods! Ask your child about the black pepper experiment, including what our question was, what their hypothesis was, what they observed during the experiment and what the conclusion was.

Wellness: Students learned about the importance of understanding little or kid-sized problems versus big or teacher-sized problems. We talked about how we need to focus on ourselves first, to try to problem solve on our own, and to use different tools to help us feel calm and regulated when needed. We made worry stones and breathing wands!

Art: For Dot Day, we learned about Yayoi Kusama and made a dot inspired pumpkin art! We also used different art materials to add colour to the background of a place we drew that helped us connect to the land. 

Student Highlights

Bronwyn: On Wednesday, we did a Science experiment where we put pepper in water and then we put out finger with soap in it, and the germs would go away!

Indica: On Thursday, we're going to Terry Fox Run with our buddies and the first time meeting our buddies!

Muhammad: For Dot Day, in the morning we did something to draw twenty circles and in the afternoon, we did a dot pumpkin. The artist who made the dot pumpkin art is Yayoi Kusama. 

Vedant: In Math, we learned about expanded forms like 4646 is 4000+600+40+6.

Bennett: We read The Tattle Tongue and it explained don't tell on people if it's related to you and if it's not a big problem. 

Tristan: We did Fun Friday and I liked the joke when some kids at the playdoh made Mr. Newton.
