February 17-20 Weekly Updates

 Important Reminders & Events

1. There are no student highlights this week because all of our blog time went to Google Slides presentations! Students did so well for their first Google Slides project. We have many more to come.

2. There is no school next Friday, February 27. It is a PD Day. 

3. Pink Shirt Day is on Wednesday, February 25. We invite everyone to wear pink (or red/purple) to represent kindness!

4. Our class will be parading around NLS and showcasing our NLS Chinese Dragon. Students in all the classes decorated scales that will be put together to create one long dragon! I invite you to wear red or yellow on Monday or a traditional Lunar New Year outfit as we represent our NLS Dragon. 

5. We said goodbye to Ryker, who is moving away. We will miss you so much, Ryker!

Learning Updates

The students had such a fun party day!! 

Let's continue to do our best and follow expectations to earn another class party!

Literacy: This week, we got to meet a real life author and she's from Calgary! Melissa Allan wrote the book "Brave like the Buffalo" and presented her book to the entire school. Afterwards, our class wrote a journal entry and shared a reflection about what we learned or how we felt during the assembly. Students also learned about contractions and the TIDE (topic, idea, detail, ending) paragraph writing tool. 

Math: We learned two new strategies for multiplication and division. One is repeated addition/subtraction and the other is break apart method. We also practiced arrays and some addition/subtraction through word problems. 

Science: Grade 3 students focused on learning about the layers of soil this week. Ask your child to name the five main layers!
