Weekly Update for January 19-23

Important Events & Reminders

1. We are very excited to be using Reflex Math, which is a fun Canadian made website to help students practice basic facts! The equations may seem simple, but it is meant for students to practice and get fluent with numbers within 20! Your child brought home their password for this website on Tuesday. If it's been misplaced, let me know and I can email it to you.

2. There is no school on Friday, January 30. It is a PD Day.

Learning Updates

Literacy: This week, students practiced reading paragraphs to look for introduction sentences, details and concluding sentences. We also wrote our own to continue the practice! We learned about antonyms and synonyms and reviewed some less common phonics like ough/eu and other sounds made by ew/ue.

Math: Students had an opportunity to review the questions they go wrong on their addition and subtraction Show What You Know. We will continue to practice over the next few weeks! Students started learning another Math topic called Geometry. Our focus this week was right angles, parallel lines, perpendicular lines and intersecting lines.

Science: We started a new topic called Earth Systems. Students learned about the four layers of Earth by making it using plastercine. They also had to bring it home and teach the layers to their family members!

Social Studies: Grade 3 students finished learned about immigration and we completed an online Show What You Know, where students answered questions about Alberta's regions, treaties, and history.
